The precise mechanism of action for paracetamol is complex and not fully understood, but it is believed to involve the inhibition of the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme pathways, particularly COX-2, in the central nervous system. This inhibition reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are mediators of pain and fever. Unlike NSAIDs, it has weak anti-inflammatory activity in peripheral tissues.
