This peptide functions as a dominant encephalitogenic epitope in H-2u mice (e.g., PL/J and B10.PL strains). Upon immunization with an adjuvant, it is processed and presented by MHC Class II (I-Au) molecules on antigen-presenting cells. This presentation potently activates autoreactive CD4+ T cells, primarily of the Th1 phenotype, which migrate to the central nervous system.
