During active HBV replication within hepatocytes, the viral polymerase protein is processed via the proteasome into short peptides. The HBVpol502 epitope is transported into the endoplasmic reticulum, loaded onto HLA-A0201 molecules, and displayed on the surface of infected cells. As an exogenous synthetic peptide, it can be used to load the same HLA-A0201 molecules on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in vitro.
